I am using the recommended Dexron III myself with no issue and will stick with that as I seem to remember that being the official recommendation from Ford. Reading the first link above it appears another company (Lubriplate) also sells a Type A but the newest Dexron III variants might out perform it, I really don't know. Like I say, I suspect they have synthesized different base oils but 3-4 mins of searching online didn't answer that. I was surprised to see it to be honest, didn't think Type A was available any more.
